Can I Learn Music Notes And The Violin As An Adult?

I am 40. I have started to feel that life is incomplete without music. Can I learn music notes now? Is it normal to learn violin at this age?

I have not played any musical instrument in my life. The local instructors have refused to train me saying that it will be difficult for them. I am yet to approach a proper music school.

Maria's Answer:

Music is indeed one of life's greatest joys.

Of course you should take up the violin! It is never too late to learn to play an instrument. And if you plan on it being a hobby of yours- why not?

I have written an article about starting to play the piano as an adult here:

A lot of it should be applicable to other instrument learners as well.

I would suggest that you keep looking for a teacher who is willing to teach adults!

Most violin teachers are taught to teach children, and it may be hard to get out of their "comfort zone". If they are connected with a music school or conservatory they might also be pressed to produce "results", and that would mean a promising young child for most places.

This might be reasons why the teachers you asked were reluctant to teach adults.

Try to find a teacher who is genuinely interested to teach you to play, and who loves to teach music- also to adults!

I wish you all the best of success!

Maria
